Fast Fibre Case Studies
Obesity among horses and ponies is a major cause of concern for owners. Not only is it undesirable from an aesthetic point of view but carrying excess weight can put undue stress on limbs and joints and increases the risk of laminitis.
Zebedee is a 13.3hh part bred Connemara who when owner Geena purchased him was very overweight. Concerned that the excess weight Zebedee was carrying could affect his health Geena contacted the nutritional team at Allen & Page who recommended a low calorie, high fibre diet in conjunction with restricted grazing and gradual exercise.
Fast Fibre a high fibre, low starch, low sugar product was suggested for Zebedee. Fast Fibre is ideal for native types and good doers as it is low in calories but still contains a full range of vitamins and minerals as well as yeast to promote a healthy digestive system, so there is no need to add any expensive supplements. In fact Geena has noticed that Zebedee’s droppings have changed from being rather loose to being much firmer. Zebedee is fed 1kg of Fast Fibre per day split into two feeds to ensure that his vitamin and mineral requirements are met. Being cereal and molasses free Fast Fibre provides slow release energy which helps to avoid excitable behaviour and is ideal for horses in light work, childrens ponies and for horses who have a tendency to be fizzy. The addition of real mint makes Fast Fibre highly palatable and Zebedee can enjoy his meal times without concern that he is receiving too many calories.
Geena is very happy with the feed and so is a happier, healthier and slimmer Zebedee.

Jake, a 15 year old Clydesdale x Highland gelding is a great character and is used for light schooling and hacking by owner Helen. Due to his breeding Jake is a very good doer, Helen found she needed to keep Jake on a permanent diet and despite this he was still overweight. Jake has always suffered from itchy skin, especially around his ears, which he would scratch so much at times that they bled. As well as being itchy Jake also intermittently suffered from loose droppings and could be grumpy, even aggressive at times.
Last year Jake was very under the weather and more itchy than ever, after Helen contacted her vet and various tests were carried out it was found that Jake had a slight kidney dysfunction and that he was intolerant of alfalfa and of large quantities of sugar in his diet.
Helen contacted the Allen & Page feed helpline looking for a low protein and sugar feed upon the recommendation of her vet. Fast Fibre which is free from molasses, cereals and alfalfa was recommended for Jake. Fast Fibre is very low in sugar, starch and calories and is ideal for horses like Jake who are good doers or for those in light work. Fast Fibre contains a full range of vitamins and minerals and yeast to help maintain a healthy digestive system.
After just two months of swapping to Fast Fibre Helen noticed a huge improvement in Jake, he was much happier in himself and had more energy when worked, the itchiness that he suffered from had all but disappeared too. Nine months on Jake is calm and relaxed and has lost an amazing 95kg making him much slimmer and healthier. Jake’s grumpy and bolshy behaviour has become a thing of the past and now Helen and Jake are looking forward to a summer of enjoyable hacks.
