The horse’s digestive system is perfectly designed for a high fibre diet, as fibre provides energy and keeps the gut healthy. Whilst starch and sugar are not bad as such for the horse, large quantities in the diet can result in unwanted effects on performance, behaviour and digestion.
The demands of work and competition often mean that we need to provide our horses with more energy than can be supplied by fibre alone. We have carefully formulated this range of feeds so that it is barley and molasses free. This ensures low starch and sugar levels, while high quality fibre ingredients provide good energy sources and help to keep the digestive system healthy. Commonly used ingredients such as barley and molasses can also cause problems for some horses in other ways. These ingredients can lead to unwanted and unexpected reactions such as excitable or bolshy behaviour, lumps and bumps or itchy and scurfy skin.
Intolerances to such ingredients appear to be coming more common, and as barley and molasses feature in the majority of horse feeds available, eliminating them from your horse’s diet can prove difficult. All the feeds in our Barley & Molasses Free Range are low starch and low sugar and contain a full range of vitamins and minerals to provide your horse or pony with a well balanced diet and the right amount of energy, whatever their level of work.
