Keep your horse safe in the sun!
Wednesday 25 July 2012
The summer sun has arrived, and while we are all enjoying spending more time with our horses or ponies, it is essential that we consider how the heat can affect our horse’s health. Like us, horses and ponies can burn in the sun, but this can be prevented by carrying out the following necessary precautions: 1). Sunscreen – There are different horse sunscreens available from your local tack shop or feed store. If you are not able to get to a shop, human sunscreen works just as well! When you apply, make sure that particular care is taken around the ears and nose. 2). Rugs – If you are going to turn your horse out in a rug, make sure that it is lightweight to prevent him from overheating. 3). Fly mask – A fly mask not only will help to protect your horse from flies, it will also help to block out some of the sunshine from your horses eyes. 4). Aftersun – If your horse already has sunburn, treat it in the same way as you would a human. Put some aftersun on to help heal and re-moisturise the skin. Finally, make sure that your horse or pony has adequate ventilation and water to help prevent any heat exhaustion - even at night!
