Irish Draft yearling has star quality
Friday 8 July 2011
An Irish Draft yearling fed on Calm & Condition is taking the showing world by storm, winning all five of his contested classes this season.
However, the horse was a gamble for owner Bruce Langley-McKinn, who bought dapple grey Carrigfada Grey Mist from Ireland without even seeing him. "I wouldn't recommend buying unseen," he laughs, "but when I saw the picture I liked what I saw. Also, I know the owner was keen enough to travel from Ireland to the English breed show, although he didn't manage to talk to me there, I knew he was honest." Mr Langley-McKinn already had a part bred ID sports horse stallion doing well in the show ring, so has a passion for the breed, and the chance of snapping up a pure bred ID was one he couldn't miss.
Thankfully the gamble has paid off and Carrigfada Grey Mist is proving himself time and again, with five wins, two championships and two reserves in his first season. "He's on Calm & Condition as I had some on the yard so I thought I would try it. He eats it like it's going out of fashion and he has put on serious condition, but all in the right way for a youngster." With a future following hounds already lined up, this young star will also be graded with the Irish Draft Society. "If he's grade 1 then I'll keep him entire and breed him," explains Mr Langley-McKinn, "and I think he will be – I'm a pretty good judge of horses!"
