Forage and Bedding Shortages

Recent press reports suggest that there may be shortages of hay, forage and possibly bedding as well this year.
Due to the recent wet weather many landowners have not been able to access their land with machinery in order to harvest their forage crops. In addition, the deluge of rain has resulted in flattening many hay crops, which simply lay in the fields. While the amount of forage that will be available this year is still uncertain, the lack of grass will undoubtedly result in a scarcity of hay and other bagged forages made from grass, which may further result in inflated prices.
There is a similar story for horse bedding made from straw as many crops cannot be harvested and are rotting in the field. In East Anglia there are reports of combines getting stuck in the fields as they attempt to harvest the crops.
The key to ensuring you will not be left without winter forage stocks is to plan ahead now. Call your usual supplier and ask how they are fairing and what stocks will be available to you. Consider topping up with bagged forages (as available) and/or fibre cubes. Some bagged forage products are imported and therefore stocks of these should be available, although they will be in high demand.
