Call Again Cavalier put down at Express Eventing
Monday 1 December 2008
Mary King lost her Beijing 2008 Olympic partner Call Again Cavalier on Sunday afternoon during the Express Eventing International Cup at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.
Mary had won a Bronze Team medal on Call Again Cavalier and it was a tragic loss, a heavy sadness fell on the remainder of the Express Eventing event at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.
The 16-year-old bay gelding fell late on the course. He was taken from the arena in a horse ambulance under the care of Express Eventing vet John Killingbeck before being put to sleep.
Mary and Call Again Cavalier were the second last to go in a competition that had its ups and downs. The pair was on target to finish second. He fell at the second element of the Duck Houses, the twelfth fence in a testing and up-to-height course.
Call Again Cavalier, owned by Eddie and Sue Davies and their daughter, Janette Chin, won the individual silver medal at the 2007 European Championships. The horse also took team bronze at the Hong Kong Olympics this summer.
Oliver Townend won the inaugural Express Eventing International with a fast clear round to take home the £100,000 first prize. Five out of the first six riders were eliminated, and there had been problems earlier in the event as the celebrity’s horses appeared to slip on the grass surface and struggle to keep momentum.
Overall just six of the nineteen starters completed. William Fox-Pitt and Ballincoola finished third a couple of seconds behind Lucy and pocketed £20,000, while Clayton Fredericks was fourth on Ben Along Time. Fifth was Italian rider Vittoria Panizzon (Rock Model) and sixth was Caroline Powell (Lenamore).
