Treble win for Cassy and Vento at Lusitano Breed Show

Monday 10 August 2009
Together they won the Novice 28 and Elementary 53 dressage classes with the highest percentages. Then in the showing classes  Vento was crowned Champion Ridden Purebred Lusitano Gelding.

Cassy tells us: "I bought Vento Fresco as a 3 year old entire from the Hon. Lucinda Wynn who runs Wynn Lusitanos. He had been lightly backed, but apart from that had only been shown in hand as a youngster. We have had many ups and downs over the past 4 years, but I think this last 6 months he has really matured physically and mentally."

"I have been involved with Lusitanos as long as I can remember, I learnt to ride at Turville Valley Stud (a classical riding and breeding centre) under the great Nan Thurman (who has sadly passed away), but her family still run the business and continue to teach people about these incredibly versatile horses. I bought my Partbred Lusitano (Maestro) from them when I was 14 and we have done everything from polo-crosse, to hunter trials to medium level dressage he is such a star, unfortunately Maestro takes more of a relaxed view to life now and is currently munching in the field. Vento however is coming into his own right now and it is his turn to shine."

"Vento is a 7 year old purebred Lusitano (his great grandsire is John Whittaker’s great BSJA speed horse Novilheiro), because Vento is so big I have taken things very slowly with him as he has had so many funny growth spurts which have meant we’ve had to step back until his body develops. My physiotherapist Gillian Tabor (an Allen & Page ambassador), has been a great support throughout this time and has given sound and structured advice in order to help him progress gradually. Vento has been on Calm & Condition the whole time I have owned him – I phoned around the helplines (before I worked at Allen & Page) and decided on Calm & Condtion. Since Power & Performance was launched (and also during its trial) I have added this to his feed at times when he will be requiring a little more from his diet, but until this summer he had only been having a small amount with the Calm & Condtion. At the beginning of June I moved him on to half Calm & Condtion and half Power & Performance (2 KG of each a day-split across feeds) and he changed into not only being physically fit but also being mentally capable to cope with the situations thrown at him. I think (fingers crossed) he is now pretty much how he will be, he is very strong physically and can now control his flexibility. He is working at elementary level dressage (but if I had the time would move up the levels quite quickly) I just want him to do it correctly and willingly."

"His main interest at the moment is show jumping, he only started learning in December - I put him into training with Sammie Jo Coffin a young rider from Cornwall who has proved herself against some of the best – she recently qualified for HOYS at the Hand, by beating Ben Maher and has just qualified another of her horses this week at the New Forrest Show – I met Sammie through work as she feeds Allen & Page sustain to most of her competing horses and has got me so many new customers. She taught him to jump just as something different for him and he loves it, at home he works over 1.30m tracks with ease, but is working up through the BSJA levels and is competing at Discovery and Newcomers at present."

"It was at the 25th Anniversary Lusitano Breed Show that we went to at Hartpury, I am on the committee this year so a lot of preparation has gone into it and I have been quite involved which is good. Vento won the Novice 38 with over 70%, won the Elementary 53 (his first time at this level), was awarded the Tequila trophy for the Lusitano with the highest percentage in the dressage and then to top it all off he won the Purebred Lusitano Gelding class where he was awarded the Jagosto trophy for the Champion of this class. We were beaten in the Championships by Uivador da Broa the winning purebred stallion who was awarded a gold medal at the show and went on to win Champion of Champions."
