Rehabilitating an Ex-Racehorse
I am about to take on an ex-racehorse from a rehabilitation centre. He has been out of training for some time now but unfortunately as the feed he is currently on is not stocked by my local supplier, I will be looking to change to another feed. Can you advise on the best way to go about this?
With any change to the diet it is important to make it very gradually, ideally over a period of 7 to 10 days. This allows the bacteria in the horse’s digestive system time to adjust to the new feed stuff and helps to avoid the incidence of digestive upset. Your horse’s owner should be happy to supply some of his current feed so that you can make the change over gradually. If your horse has enough energy, is in good condition and his behaviour sensible on his current feed, then changing over to a similar product is sensible. Most feed companies have a feed helpline that can offer practical, easy to understand advice on the most suitable products to use.
