Feeding My Lusitano

I am struggling with feeding my Lusitano gelding, he can be sharp and spooky. We have just started competing in dressage but I find that although he has plenty of energy to start with by the time we get to our second test he has gone very flat. Is there anything I can feed him to help with this?

Choosing a feed that is high in fibre and oil but low in starch would help. Often feeds with high starch contents can make some horses sharp and excitable, this is because the energy from starch is released rapidly giving the horse a sudden burst of energy. Fibre and oil on the other hand are good sources of slow release energy and provide sustainable energy that is less likely to exacerbate any unwanted behaviour and will also help to improve stamina levels.
