Drinking Away From Home
I am planning on competing further a field with my horse this season, however he is a reluctant drinker away from home. What can I do to ensure that he drinks enough?
Even a very low level of dehydration can have a huge negative impact on your horse’s performance, so it’s important to ensure that your horse drinks plenty. Taking your own water with you from home is always a good idea so that your horse isn’t faced with having to drink ‘strange’ water. While this is fine for shorter trips it may not always be feasible if you are staying overnight. In this situation it can be helpful to add some flavouring to your horse’s drinking water at home and then use the same flavouring away from home to disguise the change in water. Fruit juice, sugar beet pulp or mint flavouring is all-suitable to use.
Mixing plenty of water with your horse’s feed is also a good way of encouraging a greater intake of water. Offering small, frequent drinks will help to keep your horse’s hydration levels up too.
