Feeding Advice for your Horse or Pony

Allen & Page quality horse feeds,
the natural choice...

As a horse feed company, our guiding principle and the driving force behind all decisions is to help owners feed their horses as naturally as possible and to make really useful horse feeds to help with specific feeding problems. Everything we do follows from this principle and we blend state of the art technology and nutrition with traditional values and generations of experience to achieve this aim. Making our horse feeds as natural as possible is always our priority, and we have pushed the market forward in using better ingredients and more natural production.

We were the first horse feed company to receive Vegetarian Society approval for our whole range and led the way on only using Non-GM ingredients. As a manufacturer we are also constantly aware of our impact on the environment and our responsibility to produce our feeds in the greenest way possible. Allen & Page are genuinely striving to improve equine nutrition and educate owners. We are not just here to sell feed; it is all about doing the right thing – ethically, nutritionally and environmentally.

Attention: Competition Riders
Regrettably Allen & Page Feeds were supplied with an ingredient that had a low level contamination of a Naturally Occurring Prohibited Substance (NOPS). Due to their rigorous routine testing however, the source was quickly identified and any remaining traces of contaminated feed and ingredient was quarantined at the mill and disposed of. The feeds that might be affected will have a batch date of between 18th June and 7th July 2014. Allen and Page is audited to the NOPS protocol designed by the British Equestrian Trade Association (BETA) in 2009 to reduce the risk of naturally-occurring prohibited substances (NOPS) contaminating horse feed and, subsequently, dope-test failures. BETA have assured us that we have no connection with the racing issue outlined in the Racing Post and other media. If any riders are concerned, as a precaution please would they contact the Allen & Page nutrition team on 01362 822902. Leisure riders and those not competing are unaffected.

Get ready for the Show Season ahead
As your horse’s workload increases, so does his energy requirement, but knowing what to feed in order to ensure your horse is calm and relaxed in the show ring can be a challenging task. Your horse needs to have enough energy to perform to the best of his ability, but at the same time you need him to remain level headed! Provide too much energy and control and concentration may be lost, but provide too little, and stamina and sparkle will be lacking. It is important to remember that all horses are individuals and your horse’s energy and nutritional requirements need to be taken into account as well as temperament and workload.

Watch out for Laminitis
With the return of spring we can all enjoy a bit of sun and warmth again, but the change in weather also brings with it the flush of grass growth, that without careful management can lead to laminitis in susceptible horses and ponies. It is important to remember that there can be many other causes of the disease and whilst ponies, particularly those that are overweight, are most susceptible, it can affect any horse or pony, at any time of the year.
